What
The pneumoperitoneum is a hole from the outside to the inside of the abdominal wall. This is the first step of key hole surgeries in the abdomen.
Why
Once the pneumoperitoneum is established the surgeon then fills up the abdomen with CO2 to create space between the abdominal wall and the underlying organs. This improves visibility and safety for the instruments.
How
There are two main methods of how to establish a pneumoperitoneum. These are the Open and Closed methods
